Introduction

Australia comprises a land area of about 7.692 million square kilometers. Australia's land mass is almost as great as that of the United States of America. The geographic coordinates are- 27 00 S, 133 00 E

Culture

Food-

Australian food, the cocktail of various culture is famous for its miscellany rich cuisines. Later Australian-cookery was enriched with multi-cultural contribution produced by German, Italian, Greek, Asian and South African immigrant communities. Steak is commonly eaten here.

Language-

They usually speak English but in some locations they speak Mandarin, Italian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, many of those languages are considered to be 'endangered.

Wildlife-

A famous animal is a koalas but don't fall for there fluffy cuteness, koalas have sharp teeth and sharp claws. Now here's an animal famous for its brutal kick, the kangaroo. The kangaroo is not mean as long as you keep your distance. Kangaroos hop around on two feet and if you anger it it can kill you with a powerful kick.

History

"During the 17th century and 18th century European explorers reached Australia. In 1770 Captain Cook claimed eastern Australia for Britain. He called it New South Wales.Life was hard for ordinary people in the 18th century and punishments for even minor crimes were severe. In England you could be hanged for more than 200 different offences. However as an alternative to hanging prisoners were sometimes sentenced to transportation. In the 18th century convicts were transported to Virginia and Maryland in what is now the USA. Transportation was a relatively humane punishment. At any rate it was better than hanging!"

Australian Sheep-

In 1797 Merino sheep were brought to Australia. The number of sheep in Australia quickly boomed. There was a huge demand for their wool in England. By 1820 there was 100,000 sheep in Australia. By 1830 the figure had reached 1 million.

Early Rebellions in Australia-

In March 1804 some Irish convicts led by Philip Cunningham took part in a rebellion at Castle hill. On March 4th they captured a convict station at Parramatta." A second rebellion, the rum rebellion occurred in 1808. William Bligh, famous captain of the Bounty, was made a governor in 1806."
